Future Complications
For those who do not notice the tick or the rash, the infection often spreads to other parts of the body such as the nervous system, cardiovascular system, muscles, joints, the liver, and the brain. Lyme is known as the "great imitator" because it mimics symptoms of meningitis, fibromyalgia, encephalitis, and many other disorders. Therefore, it is quite common to be misdiagnosed, allowing the bacteria more time to further infect your body. The list of complications are virtually endless, and treating late-stage Lyme Disease is not as simple as a 3 week course of antibiotics. Studies have shown that symptoms lessen over time (up to 9 years), but there is no cure.
